The Who, What, When, Why & How of Europe's Christmas Markets!

If you are looking to be truly delighted, impressed, enchanted and immersed into the Christmas Spirit, then this list gives you an all encompassing insight to Europe's best Christmas Markets.... we are spoilt for choice!

You can find authentic, and you will find traditional, but this list is also about finding charming and accessible.   This list doesn't cover them all, only the top 5, but they are 5 Christmas Markets that shouldn't be missed.

1. DRESDEN, GERMANY

27th November - 24th December 2019

Well known as a destination for it's history and architecture, Dresden is an iconic Christmas destination and one that should be visuited by all Christmas lovers.

Christmas or Weihnachten as it's referred to locally, bring with it the excuse of the locals of this place to turn their city into one emmensely festive and enchanting winter wonderland.   It offers a large variety of both food and market stalls to delight all visitors.

Dresden is a Christmas experience as it is made up of different markets around the town, but the must-see market is the one outside the famous Frauenkirche church.

If you are looking for something a bit more memorable, perhaps you could be tempted to try a cup of warm Glunwein whilst being drawn in by the smell of chestnuts at Altmarkt.

How to get there:

Depending on your departure airport form the UK, fly to Berlin with Flyebe (1hr 50min) and then hop on the train (2hr 8min).

2. NUREMBERG, GERMANY

29th November - 24th December 2019

Aromas of mulled wine, bratwurst and gingerbread all positioned to draw you in.   And why not!   Do not miss one of the finest Christmas Markets in all of Europe.

You will be greeted by a vibrant atmosphere and a colorfully decorated old town.   Make sure you visit the Market of the Sister Cities so that you can get your hands on a few international gifts, including French marmalade and angels carved from wood ( Czech craft).  Lastly, make the extra effort to climb the stairs of the Church of Our Lady and get a birds eye view of the lights, red and white coloured stalls and all the amazing, twinkling Christmas-themed decorations.

Ryanair does direct flights from London Stanstead to Nuremberg, then it's just a city transfer and your there.

3. VIENNA, AUSTRIA

16th November - 26th December 2019

Vienna, is proud to host some of the oldest Christmas Markets around.   With traditions dating back as far as the middle ages, unique charm and magical spirit abundant, the Rathausplatz Market is the place to be!   

Try the delicious mulled punch, it comes with quite a punch indeed.   Once the mood is set, make your way through the wide variety of Christmas stalls selling ornaments, candles and nibbles to much on as you browse.   You also need to set time to see the giant Christmas tree that is paced in front of the Rathaus.

If you are looking for a hidden gem amounst the busyness of the markets, make sure you visit Spittleberg.   Its a place that is loved by the locals as the idea venue to wind down after a busy encounter with vendors and stalls alike.

4. ZAGREB, CROATIA

30th November 2019 - 7th January 2020

The longest running Christmas Market (39 days) on our list.

The Croatian Capital has won the title of Best European Christmas Market, three years in a row now and this is truly testament to the sheer variety of events and stalls that are on offer.   Something for everyone has never been more true.   

To see the most exciting of events you have to head to Ban Jospi jelacic Square.   Here you'll find music and concerts on open-air stages.   then there is the magical sky lantern ceremony which sees thousands of lanterns released into the sky in one of the most spectacular of Croatian ceremonies.

The Croatian capital deservedly won the title of Best European Christmas Market, three years in a row. Offering an extensive variety of events and stalls, there truly is something for even the most discerning travellers. The most exciting events are held on Ban Josip Jelačić Square, which brings the city to life with music and concerts on open-air stages. For a truly magical experience, take in the iconic sky lantern ceremony, which sees thousands of lanterns released into the sky in one of Croatia’s most spectacular Christmas traditions. Zagreb also has lots on offer for the kids, including skating at Ice Park as well as a number of free concerts, all of which will take your Christmas experience to another level!
